1000 followers already

by ads on 06/07/2010

For all of you who are watching this experiment I have now reached the 1000 followers mark. Nobody is more surprised than me. You can read my last blog post here if you haven’t already seen it.

Now I have crossed the 1000 followers milestone – achieved with a tiny bit of management and by automatically broadcasting content which is freely available. To be honest I don’t think I’ve yet read any of the posts and comments that I’ve been tweeting from @AGSocialMedia but despite this the numbers keep growing.

Perhaps the content is startlingly good and I’m a genius without even knowing it? Perhaps I should start to read my own tweets…I might even learn something!

Anyway, I shall start to drop-in some more regular links to my own content and track the results of this and report back when I pass the 2000 follower mark or when something startling happens.

Stay tuned!

Exactly….what’s the point? I’m new to Twitter and started following a sample of twitterers just to get the hang of it. My initial impression is….what a load of hot air and windbags! I am now starting to reduce and block the list of people I am following based on the following criteria:
1. They DM me with selling or sign up offers.
2. They tweet several times a day …..rubbish tweets.
3. They continuously quote others because they have nothing of consequence to say themselves.
4. They re-tweet easily found news just for the sake of tweeting.

Twitter has the potential to be a valuable communication tool but only if the above cop on! They haven’t “got it” that there is no point shouting in the desert…..what is the point in broadcasting rubbish when everyone has ceased to listen to you?

From my random searches I found that a certain amount of people I elect to follow then follow me….why? I don’t know. And even worse….some pretend to follow me and then immediately unfollow……we get notified of this….don’t they know?

Seems to me a lot of companies etc. have jumped on the bandwagon and just like they used to bulk mail on snail mail and spam on the internet….what they are doing on twitter is another form of spam and unsolicited mailing (I know you will say that following is soliciting the tweets, I think many follow like me in the beginning and just don’t bother to weed out the spammers afterwards – too time consuming maybe).

And I wonder ….. given the recriprocal following that people do…….how many are GENUINELY interested, following and communicating with whom? So far very little of mine is genuine and I think that my time on Twitter is a waste of time both:

1. From a marketing point of view – as it is not reaching any potential customers
2. From a personal point of view – as few of the REAL people I know are using Twitter.

That’s my 5 cents worth!
