The most asked question I get in my work within Social Media is probably ‘how often should I tweet?’ – that is a very interesting question. My advice has traditionally been ‘as often as you have something to say!’
Clearly, sending a Tweet every 5 minutes about your journey in to work is a great way of getting yourself unfollowed by everyone, but sometimes (rarely) the pointless little tweets ‘I’m having a coffee in Starbucks, Clerkenwell’ or ‘I heard an interesting story’ can add enormous value.
So you need to use discretion. Tweeting once every three weeks is a waste of time, tweeting every three minutes is a waste of effort…
…find a happy medium.
While I realise the grey area in between far too much and almost never (I’m guilty of almost never) is pretty vast, and the validity of the frequency of tweets might depend on the individual/business in question, can you not get a little more specific, Adam?
Perhaps there’s an equation which can provide the solution (x = 2b + 1a x 5c + 2d, where a = conversational tweet, b = useful tweet, c = working day, d = weekend and x being weekly tweet count)?
I just think that as a guide you can’t go far wrong with three a day: you’ll never drown out other users or bore your followers; you’re less likely to be forgotten or lost amongst the crowd; and you stand a chance in hell of actually sticking to that figure!
Personally I’ve missed that chance in hell…but still…!
What a fantastic idea – tweetemathics!
Knew I should’ve come up with a name for that first!
