mobinnova_beamA few weeks ago, I went to the BT Experience at the BT Tower. A fantastic event where I was served lunch in the brilliant revolving restaurant on the 36th floor – awesome view and an incredible journey up there in a lift travelling at 1400 feet per minute!

Anyway, the range if telephony based products at the exhibition was impressive but the thing that really captured my imagination was a laptop in the corner that was being quietly launched called the Mobinnova Beam.

As a computer it wasn’t that impressive – yes it was pretty, and yes it had an amazing battery life (up to 25 DAYS of continuously playing MP3s) – but with built in wi-fi and 3G and very little processing power it really is the perfect expression of the cloud computing philosophy.

With the exception of designers, which of us really requires large computation capacities on our machines…?

Let’s put it another way; what does salesforce (the best CRM system), Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, YouTube, Google docs/latitude/wave, wikis, MobileMe, Blogger, Plaxo, eCademy and Hotmail ALL have in common?

They are all browser based products.

By this time next year, it will be possible to do what you need to do with NO software on your machine (except Firefox) as long as you have internet access.

So come on, throw away your large computers and set yourself free!
