Over the last month or so, I have re-forged a relationship with an old friend of mine who moved to New Zealand about eight years ago. The interesting thing is that without Facebook & LinkedIn we no doubt would have lost touch.
We would have lost touch not because there wasn’t any value in the relationship, but simply that the logistics of 12k miles and a 12 hour time difference would have made conversation too difficult. Yes, of course there’s email, but the reality is that it’s quite an invasive medium, and it only seems to work when you have a ‘point’ in sending a message.
By contrast Facebook and the like, are perfect for keeping these old relationships alive and bubbling without having to invest any real time or effort in then… kind of like bumping in to old friends in the pub!
Well, the point of my story is that this guy is now moving back to the EU, and there’s a chance that we may be working together (which is quite exciting) and this certainly wouldn’t have happened had we not have been connected by social media.
So, the moral of this story is – connect with your friends, partners, clients and suppliers on all of these mediums (even if they’ve moved to the other side of the world and won’t be coming back) because you never know what the future may hold!
